Suboxone Q&A

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone helps people suffering from substance use disorder or addiction stop using the drugs they depend on.

Suboxone medication is suitable for treating opioid addiction. Opioids include illegal narcotics like heroin and strong prescription painkillers like morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and fentanyl.

These drugs cause severe mental and physical health problems. Addiction destroys lives, robbing people of their homes, jobs, and relationships. Stopping drug misuse is extremely challenging because it causes distressing side effects and cravings.

DigiPSYCH uses Suboxone alongside behavior therapies and counseling to reduce the withdrawal side effects and help people overcome their addictions.

How does Suboxone work?

Suboxone reduces your reliance on opioids using two medications: buprenorphine and naloxone.

Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist which works similarly to opioids in your brain. As a result, you get the euphoric sensations that opioids produce, but they’re milder. This helps reduce your physical dependence on opioids and control your cravings.

Buprenorphine’s effects increase with every dose at first, then level off. If you take a higher dose at this point, the results don’t change. This means you’re less likely to misuse or depend on buprenorphine.

The other drug in Suboxone is naloxone, which blocks the brain’s opioid receptors, reducing the risks of buprenorphine misuse or overdose.

Where can I get Suboxone?

Suboxone is only available from approved health care providers because it’s controlled under the Drug Addiction Treatment Act (DATA) of 2000. Dr. Hussain has the required buprenorphine waiver from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), so you can receive Suboxone treatment at DigiPSYCH.

Very few prescribers are available despite the large population of patients needing Suboxone. After assessing your suitability for treatment, Dr. Hussain can prescribe Suboxone in about 40 days.

How do I take Suboxone?

Suboxone treatment for drug addiction begins with an induction phase. You must stop taking the opioids you misuse between 12-24 hours before visiting Dr. Hussain. This ensures you’re in the early stages of withdrawal. This is the best, safest time to begin Suboxone.

Dr. Hussain works with you over a secure video link to help you through withdrawal until your cravings are controlled and most of the side effects are gone. You then enter the stabilization phase, reducing your Suboxone intake to alternate days instead of daily.

Therapy sessions alongside Suboxone increase the treatment’s effectiveness, helping restore mental and physical well-being.
